"I love food. Eating it, cooking it, sharing it…” Denise Levy

My kitchen has always been the heart of the home, a place where friends and family gather together and bond over the preparation and eating of fabulous food, and this is in essence what the GINGER & LIME concept is; opening my kitchen to others who are also passionate about food and who enjoy the experience of cooking together. Our interactive cooking sessions follow a free-style approach; you can choose to get stuck into preparing a variety of tasty dishes from scratch (always under our watchful eye of course), gather around the kitchen island and watch how we prepare dishes or sit back with a glass of wine and a chat with the other guests; the choice is yours.

Something very special happens when people from very different backgrounds get together and share in the preparation of food - there is a bonding and a deep connection that occurs. Food cooked with love feeds not only the body, but also very much the soul. You will also forget your problems for a short while, as you become very present and very grounded in our kitchen. It is hard not to, when using an extremely sharp knife, or tasting a complex sauce to determine exactly the right ingredient it needs to make it perfect. We have seen and experienced this many times here at Ginger & Lime, and it is fascinating to watch how it unfolds every time we cook! Combined energy and loads of laughs, I guess!

I was introduced to international cuisine at a young age when I followed a career as an international model and then later on, when I established Cape Town Productions, a photographic production company hosting international photo teams, with my husband, Gavin.

Both careers required much travelling, which exposed me to all kinds of food, from the wonderful complex Asian flavours to the traditional, authentic Italian cuisine, and everything in between. I constantly keep learning and I am hungry for knowledge of new dishes and ways to prepare food. I visit the kitchens in the restaurants and hotels wherever I can and I get to cook with other chefs in a very hands on way when I can when travelling.

Ginger and Lime gives me an opportunity for me to share my passion and my knowledge with what I have learnt about food and the many ways to prepare it, in an easy and relaxed way. Our interactive cooking experiences range from Asian-inspired dishes through the Mediterranean and back to local cuisine. Our winter curry evenings where we prepare curries from all over the world have been particularly popular.

The evenings also make for wonderful gifts as I find that, especially youngsters are moving away from gifting “stuff” and rather go for a shared experience with friends or family thereby giving of their time (the most precious gift) and learning new culinary skills at the same time.

Our beautiful venue can also host private functions, from Masterchef-style parties or team building events, to exclusive birthday dinners and other special celebrations. As it is so private, it has also been used for catered EXCO and board meetings by some major companies. We also do kids parties which are great fun! Recently we have done several new product launches and also assisted with recipe and menu development. We are looking in this area for expansion as well, as have a great product up our sleeves, a work in progress right now.

Another exciting aspect of Ginger and Lime is hosting excellent guest chefs who share their talents with us. We have been lucky enough to have Liam Tomlin (my food hero) in the kitchen several times, so keep an eye out for who else is coming to join us, as these courses sell out very fast!

I have a truly wonderful team working with me, who inspire and energise me all the time, and I am incredibly grateful to them for their input. I acknowledge that I could not do it without them, and that they are an integral part of the Ginger & Lime experience. They really have been doing it for the LOVE of COOKING!!! That kind of support is priceless, and we all still have such fun together. I think it is this synergy and shared passion that shines through every time, setting us apart from the normal cooking schools. With us it is an all-round INTERACTIVE COOKING EXPERIENCE that makes lasting memories!
